Revision: Compass
11:38 PM on Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Hi all, there are a few things you need to remember from the compass lesson we had. I've place them in the revision notes below. I've tried to make it as short and as easy to remember as possible.

* * *

1. Know Your Directions

  • The sun is always in the East in the morning and in the West in the evening.
  • You should be able to tell where is North, South, East and West by looking at the sun.
  • You should NOT be able to do this in the afternoon when the sun is directly above head.

2. Know The Parts Of Your Compass

3. How to Hold Your Compass

There are 2 things to take note when you are holding your compass in front of your chest:

  • Make sure it is far away from all metallic objects.
  • Make sure it is parallel to the ground.
4. How to Use Your Compass

There are 2 things to turn when using the compass:

  • Turn the housing so that the correct bearing is below the direction of travel-arrow.
  • Turn the compass/yourself so that the needle is inline with orienting arrow.
5. Pacing

You take “X” steps to walk 100 meter. Now you need to walk “Y” meter.
The number of steps you need to take = X/100 * Y

That's all. It is very very easy. If you don't understand anything, please ask any of the officers.
